Today, a spokesman for Germany’s Dortmund Airport told the news agency Reuters that they suspect that the hacker attack, which can also be called a simple cyber attack, may be behind the disturbance in the system. Airport spokesperson said that we are trying to fix the problem, but we are guessing that this fault was not due to regular overload. German media outlet Spiegel Online said the outage could be a DDoS attack, in which high-volume traffic is directed with the help of ‘hacktivists’ to take targeted servers offline.
More than 200 flights were canceled
An IT system glitch at Lufthansa on Wednesday (15 February) forced air traffic controllers in Frankfurt to cancel all flights from that airport. Media reports said that more than 200 flights were cancelled.
At the same time, flights coming to Frankfurt Airport were diverted towards Munich, Nuremberg and Düsseldorf. A spokesman for Deutsche Telekom later said that four broadband fiber cables had been damaged during construction work at the Deutsche Bahn facility.
Bloomberg said that the construction work has not been conducted by the company. Lufthansa resumed flight operations on Thursday morning. The airline tweeted that operations have returned to normal for the evening and tomorrow.
