New York City Council member Linda Lee shared a video in which she called on the Department of Education to recognize Diwali as an official holiday for New York students.

Sharing the video on Twitter, Linda Lee wrote, “We cannot fully appreciate the great diversity of New York culture until one-fifth of our students share their traditions with their families.” There will be no official holiday to celebrate. I call on New York schools to make Diwali an official holiday and a historic resolution has been passed in this regard.”

At the same time, New York Assembly member Jennifer Rajkumar tweeted, “BREAKING: People’s Champion Linda Lee passed a resolution supporting school leave on Diwali and supported our bill regarding Diwali.”
