Jammu and Kashmir Cleanliness Campaign: Sarpanch of Sadiwara in Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Ahmad Ganai has launched a wonderful campaign to keep the village clean. To save household plastic waste from being thrown in fields and ponds, he has started giving gold coins to people. For the past one year, he has been running a campaign of ‘Give polythene, take a gold coin’.
Campaign started for this reason
Farooq Ahmad Ganai says that if we do not pay attention to cleanliness, then in the coming 10 years there will be no fertile land and no clean source of water left. Ganai further says that while there is a lot of focus on cleanliness from the government and the administration, the citizens also have to contribute.
Ganai, a lawyer by profession, started last year by convincing villagers to build garbage pits in their homes to ensure that solid waste does not go outside. However, polythene has always been a matter of concern as it does not decompose even in garbage pits. In such a situation, he started the ‘Polythene Lao, Sona Lo’ campaign.
Ganai now gives a gold coin to those who bring 20 quintals of polythene. At the same time, a silver coin is given to those who bring less than 20 quintals of polythene.
Soon this campaign will be implemented in all panchayats
Please tell that Anantnag’s Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Riyaz Ahmed Shah has appreciated this campaign. He has said that this model will be encouraged and implemented in all the panchayats of the district so that our villages can become garbage free and polythene free. He further said that though the idea was conceptualized by the Sadiwara Panchayat, the district administration also supported it. The administration is also working on solid waste management in the district.
Shah says that we have started door-to-door garbage collection. Along with this, community dustbins and domestic dustbins have also been made available. Drains, compost pits and soak pits are also being constructed. So far more than 60,000 compost pits have been constructed in the district.
