Ministry of External Affairs: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) told the Lok Sabha on Friday that 8,343 Indian prisoners, including undertrials, are lodged in various jails across the world. Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan told the Lok Sabha that the government accords top priority to the safety and well-being of Indians abroad, including prisoners in foreign jails.
1,926 prisoners in UAE
State Minister V Muraleedharan told this information while answering a question. In the Lok Sabha, Muraleedharan informed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has the highest number of 1,926 Indian prisoners, followed by 1,362 in Saudi Arabia and 1,222 in Nepal.
India signed agreements with 31 countries
Minister V Muraleedharan said, "As per information available with the Ministry, the number of Indian prisoners including undertrials in foreign jails is 8,343." He said that India has signed transfer of sentenced persons (TSP) agreements with 31 countries.
