PM Modi to Inaugurate HAL Tumakuru Plant: Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Monday (February 6), the country’s largest helicopter manufacturing plant will be inaugurated in Tumakuru, Karnataka. This plant is being seen as ‘self-reliance’ in the defense manufacturing sector. The Ministry of Defense gave this information on Saturday (February 4).
Government funded Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has set up this unit which is spread over 615 acres. It is being told that initially Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), then Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and later Indian Multirole Helicopter (IMRH) will be made in it. Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation of this plant in 2016.
Defense Ministry gave this information regarding HAL plant
In a statement, the Defense Ministry said, “HAL plans to manufacture over 1,000 helicopters in the range of 3 to 15 tonnes with a total turnover of over Rs 4 lakh crore over a period of 20 years.” Apart from generating direct and indirect employment, the Tumakuru plant through its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities will promote the development of the surrounding areas through large scale community-centric programmes, on which the company will spend a substantial amount.’ ‘
The ministry said that initially the plant will produce 30 helicopters annually, after which this number will be increased to 60 and then to 90 in a phased manner.
Agreement has already been made for so many helicopters
An agreement has already been signed with HAL for the production of 15 LCH helicopters. Ten of these will go to the Indian Air Force and five will be kept by the army. It is being told that the Army and Air Force need 160 such LCH helicopters, so the company is expected to get a follow-on order. In terms of value, 45 per cent material in LCH is indigenous, which will be increased to 55 per cent.
Indian multirole helicopter will compete with Russian Mi-17
The Indian Multirole Helicopter (IMRH), built at the Tumakuru plant itself, is expected to compete with the Russian helicopter Mi-17. According to HAL, its plant can cater to a large market (both in India and abroad) as around 40 air forces around the world use Mi-17 type helicopters. Let us tell you that this helicopter is also being told the mainstay of the transport fleet of the Indian Air Force.
