Context image The windstreak at the top of this VIS image is located on the Tharsis volcanic flows east of Arsia Mons. Windstreaks form downwind of craters and other topographic highs. Surface winds are deflected by the crater rim into chaotic flow over and around the crater, both removing and depositing dust and sand.
