Cow Genome Sequencing: The trend of desi cow rearing is increasing in India. From natural farming to milk production, desi cow is being promoted a lot. Now the scientists of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) have prepared draft genome sequence to increase the capacity of animal husbandry sector through indigenous cows, better management and improving the fertility of cows. The genetic structure of Kasaragod Dwarf, Kasaragod Kapila, Vechur and Ogonal has been successfully presented in the process of genome sequencing first time on desi cow. Dr. Vineet K Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, involved in this research, told that for the first time in the country, the genome sequence of indigenous cows has been done, the result of which has been very good. This will also help in expanding the animal husbandry sector and increasing milk production.
The empire of indigenous cows will increase
IISER scientists have studied the genetic structure of Kasargod Dwarf, Kasargod Kapila, Vechur and Ongole in indigenous cows, the results of which will now help in improving fertility, improving milk production and identifying diseases in indigenous cows.
Dr. Vineet K. is associated with this research. Sharma explains that with this kind of genome sequencing on indigenous cows, an attempt was made to find out how these cows have adapted to the Indian environment or how these cows adapt themselves to the environment. With this, there will be special help in increasing the number of indigenous breed cows and milk production.
What is genome sequencing
For information, let us tell you that the blueprint of a group of instructions for the structure and operation of any organism, plant or animal is called genome, in which the necessary information is present for the growth, development and smooth functioning of the organism.
The aim of the research conducted at IISECR, Bhopal is also to find out how Indian origin cows adapt to the environment here. This is the world’s first genome sequencing, so it has also been published in BioRxRV.
Vechur cow is the smallest breed
If media reports are to be believed, samples of Government Veterinary Hospital and Kapila Gaushala of Kerala have been included for genome sequencing. This research revealed that Vechur is the smallest breed of cow in the world. The height of this cow is up to 28 feet, while maximum protein is found in the milk of this cow.
