Bangladesh New President: Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is ready to become the next President of Bangladesh. The ruling party Awami League has secured an absolute majority in the parliament in his support. After this, the party has declared him the candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Kader made an announcement in this regard on Sunday (February 13). Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is 74 years old and has also participated in the country’s liberation struggle.
Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu can replace the country’s longest-serving President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, whose term ends on April 23 this year. Mohammad Abdul Hamid has been serving as the President of Bangladesh for the last two terms. Earlier, Mohammad Abdul Hamid was sworn in for his second term on April 24, 2018.
Awami League 305 seats
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, a person cannot hold a third term as President. Chuppu, however, will be elected unopposed to the top post as his name has been announced by the ruling Awami League, which has a total of 305 seats in the 350-member house. According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, the presidential election must be held 90 to 60 days before the end of the current president’s five-year term.

- Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu was born in 1949 in the northwestern Pabna district of East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). He was a leader of the student and youth wing of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
- Chuppu was also part of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh and was imprisoned for protesting after the assassination of Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina).
- He was inducted into the country’s judicial service in 1982 and on his return to the Awami League in 1996 served as the coordinator of the Bangabandhu assassination case.
- He retired as District and Sessions Judge. After his retirement, Chuppu served as one of the commissioners of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission, after which he joined politics and became a member of the Awami League Advisory Council.
- Chuppu’s wife, Rebecca Sultana, is a former Joint Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh.
