Free Seed Distribution: Tilkut of Bihar is famous all over the world, but do you know that Bihar itself does not produce sesame, but it is imported from other states. In this episode, the Agriculture Department has now planned to achieve self-sufficiency in sesame production. The Gaya District Agriculture Department has set a target of mass cultivation of sesame in 10,000 acres in the district, for which there is also a plan to provide free seeds to the farmers. Let us tell you that sesame is imported from Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal for Tilkut made in Gaya, but by the end of the year the state itself will become self-sufficient in sesame production. Then tilkut will be made from the store of this sesame and sold in the country and abroad. This will not only increase the income of the farmers, but also pave the way for new sesame processing units.
Collective farming target of 10,000 acres
Bihar Agriculture Department has planned to cover 1 acre in Garma and 10,000 acres in Kharif with sesame cultivation, for which free seed distribution will also be done by Gaya District Agriculture Department from February 15. In the beginning, the focus will be on many blocks including Gaya’s Guraru, Banke Bazar, Jhamamganj. After distribution of sesame seeds, there is a plan to sow sesame in February itself, so that crop production is available in time.
Farmers’ income will increase
Talking to the media, District Agriculture Officer in Gaya, Sudama Mahato said that both hot and kharif seasons are favorable for sesame cultivation. Sesame is sown from February 15 to March 15 in the hot season, while in the Kharif season it is sown along with other crops.
At present, farmers will be given free seeds to cultivate sesame in the hot season. By sowing them, farmers can get production from one acre to 3 quintals. It is sold in the market for Rs 120 to 150 per kg. In this way, you can get an income of Rs 40,000 from sesame cultivation in one acre.
The good thing is that sesame cultivation does not cost much. There is less possibility of pests and diseases in this, the entire crop is prepared in two irrigations, although 10 to 15 thousand are spent in farming, then the farmer can get a net profit of Rs. 25,000.
Why is sesame consumed the most in Gaya?
For information, let us tell you that sesame processing units are running on a large scale in Gaya, so the consumption of sesame here is the highest in the country. There is no special production of sesame in Bihar, so it has to be imported from other states, due to which the makers of tilkut also have to spend a separate cost.
This is the reason why the Agriculture Department has made a plan to increase the area under sesame in the state itself. Its preparation had started only last year. Sesame was sown on 15 to 20 acres as a trial in five blocks of the state, which yielded very good results.
