Seats formula settled between CPIM and Congress, both parties will fight on so many seats

Congress And CPI(M) Reached An Agreement: The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front and the Congress on Thursday reached an agreement on seat-sharing for the Tripura assembly elections to be held on February 16. A top Congress leader has given this information. The seat sharing was agreed upon on Thursday, the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers.

CPI(M) and Congress were at loggerheads over seats

There was a deadlock between the two parties, the CPI(M) and the Congress, over the seat sharing for the Tripura assembly elections. On January 25, the Left Front declared its candidates for 47 out of 60 assembly seats, leaving only 13 seats for the Congress. After this, the Congress had fielded its candidates on 17 seats.

The central leaders of both the parties accepted the formula of 47 seats for the Left Front and 13 seats for the Congress to defeat the BJP. After this Congress withdrew three out of 17 candidates. Another Congress candidate did not file nomination.

Consent made on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers

State Congress president Birjit Sinha told PTI, “The seat-sharing agreement between the CPI(M) and the Congress for the upcoming assembly elections was finalized on Thursday. This is the last day for withdrawal of nominations.” As per the agreement, three Congress leaders withdrew their nominations.”

He said that 13 CPI(M) candidates, who had filed their nominations before the seat-sharing agreement, have also withdrawn their papers. Senior CPI(M) leader Pabitra Kar said that the deadlock with the Congress over seat sharing has finally been resolved through talks.

State Congress president Sinha said, “Now we will fight the elections together so that we can defeat the BJP, which fooled the public and won the last election.” He said that both the parties will campaign jointly to defeat the BJP. He alleged that the BJP has ‘strangled democracy’ during the last five years.
