Many people bring fake stones in the name of real ones. 600 years old Shaligram stone is being used to make idols of Lord Rama and Mother Sita. The age of this stone has been estimated to be one lakh years.
Shaligram stone is being brought from here for the idol of Ram-Sita
It is being told that the Shaligram stone is being brought from Nepal to Ayodhya for the idol of Ram-Sita to be installed in the sanctum sanctorum. There is a river named Kali Gandaki in Nepal. Two big Shaligram rocks have been taken out from this river for the idols. The weight of both the rocks is 26 and 14 tonnes respectively. The stones are about seven feet long and five feet wide. By carving these stones, idols of child form of Ram Lala and idol of Mother Sita will be made.

It is said that Shaligram stone is found in the Kali Gandaki river of Nepal and its surrounding area. Generally this Muktinath is found on the banks of Kali Gandaki river. Only knowledgeable people can identify the real Shaligram stone. Scientifically, Shaligram stone is a kind of fossil. These stones are not of one or two, but of 33 types. According to Hindu religion, Shaligram stone is representative of Lord Vishnu. People of Shaivism also worship Shaligram in the form of Shivling.
