Meghalaya: A big change has taken place in Meghalaya before the assembly elections. Former assembly speaker here Martin M Dango has joined BJP. Elections are to be held in Meghalaya on 27th of this month. Martin Dango has been MLA for 5 times. Cabinet minister Sanbor Shulai along with senior party officials welcomed Dango’s supporters at the BJP office.
Dango was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1998 from the Langerin seat, contesting as a People’s Democratic Movement candidate. Then in the year 2003, he was elected from this seat on a Congress ticket. After delimitation, this seat was made a part of Ranikor constituency. He won the elections of 2008, 2013 and 2018 from Ranikor.
Dangos have been changing parties
However, after being elected in 2018, he resigned from the country’s oldest party and joined the ruling National People’s Party, but was defeated in a by-election later that year. “We will work together for the upliftment of the poor and greater development of the state,” he said in his welcome address.
Had announced to join BJP
Before joining BJP, Dango said that I do not have money yet. Whatever decision you all have taken, I will respect that decision. Dango, a five-time MLA, said that he has spoken to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and explained to him that my supporters were angry with the party for neglecting me financially. Dango took the decision to join the party after a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati in the presence of BJP MLA Alexander Lalu Heck.
