He was punished because of Galileo’s theory ‘Earth is moving’. The reason for this is that it was accepted in the theory of that time that ‘the earth is stable and other planets and constellations revolve around it.’
Galileo lost between religion and research
Galileo went out in search of such truth related to science in which religion proved wrong and in this way Galileo lost in search of truth related to religion and science. In fact, it was written in the Bible that the Earth is the center of space and the Sun revolves around the Earth. It is a matter of those times when logic and science did not have much meaning for the people. Whatever was written in the Bible became the final and unchanging truth.
But Galileo found in his discovery that the Sun does not revolve around the Earth, but the Earth revolves around the Sun. In such a case, if Galileo were to be proved right, it would mean that what is written in the Bible is a lie. That is, what the Pope and the clergy are telling the public through the Bible, would have proved to be a lie.
This discovery of Galileo was resented by the Roman Church and the priests. In such a situation, it was necessary to prove Galileo wrong in front of the people to prove religion to be true and to tell science a lie, due to which it was equally necessary to punish him, which Galileo got.
Galileo’s dialogue was opposed
In the book ‘The Dialogue of to the Principal System of the World’ written by Galileo Galilei, he claimed that the Earth revolves around the Sun. This claim of Galileo was found wrong by the Rome Church and he was prosecuted. Although Galileo stuck to his claim, he was put in jail for this.
Galileo, who was imprisoned for life, later apologized to the Church for what he had written, after which his sentence was reduced. However, Galileo was put under house arrest. Not only this, his book was also stopped from being published. Galileo died on 8 January 1642 while under house arrest.
About 350 years after Galileo’s death, Pope John Paul I acknowledged that Galileo’s research was right and the Church was wrong. The whole world still remembers Galileo as the best mathematician and astronomer.
