He accused the BJP of trying to contact the people of this community as ‘friends’ in the name of CAA.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a government program, “They (Centre) are misleading people in the name of amended citizenship law.” We have been taking care of the people of the Matua community for a long time, but when the elections are near, the BJP goes to them and claims to be their friend by mentioning the CAA….” The Matua community is basically Belongs to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). It started migrating to West Bengal from the 1950s due to religious persecution there.
The CAA provides for citizenship to migrants from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities coming from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, so far no one has been given citizenship under this law, because the government has not yet made rules in this regard.
