Princess Amrit Kaur: When the cabinet was formed for the first time after independence in the country, one of the members of PM Nehru’s cabinet was Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur became the country’s first woman cabinet minister but earlier her name was not in the list. At the behest of Mahatma Gandhi, he was kept in the cabinet and then what he did was recorded in history. Today (February 2) is the birth anniversary of Princess Amrit Kaur.
The establishment of AIIMS (AIIMS) was the biggest achievement of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur as the health minister of the country. He played an important role in making AIIMS stand as a prestigious institute of the country. She was not only the first health minister of India but also the first Asian woman to head the World Health Assembly.

Princess Amrit Kaur was the daughter of the Kapurthala royal family. However, his father Harnam Singh had converted to Christianity even before his birth. Harnam Singh met Golaknath Chatterjee, who was a missionary. Coming under his influence, Harnam Singh adopted Christianity. Later, Harnam Singh married Priscilla, the daughter of this Golaknath. Harnam and Priscilla had 10 children. The youngest daughter was born on 2 February 1889. It was named Amrit Kaur.

Princess Amrit Kaur went to London for studies and enrolled in Oxford University there. During this, an incident changed the direction of his life. Once she was at a party in London. During this, an Englishman asked him to dance with him. On his refusal, he started insulting the Indians. It was from here that he started taking interest in the national freedom movement.

When she returned to India in 1909, she joined the national movement after being influenced by the work of Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Amrit Kaur learned about Gandhi and his works through Gokhale. Later, she became an exclusive follower of Gandhi. She also went to jail for Dandi March. After the death of her parents, she left the palace in 1930 and devoted herself entirely to the freedom movement.
Establishment of AIIMS
On February 18, 1956, the then Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur introduced a new bill in the Lok Sabha. At that time he did not have any pre-prepared speech. Whatever she said during this, she spoke from the heart. He not only introduced the bill but also started raising funds for its establishment. For this he used his international fame and got help from America, Sweden, West Germany, Australia and New Zealand. He also gave his palatial house in Shimla to AIIMS.
