6. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 southeastern provinces affected by the earthquake. Erdogan said that a number of emergency measures would be taken in the affected areas with humanitarian relief workers and financial aid. We will quickly complete the procedures related to this decision, which will cover our 10 provinces. Erdogan said his government would send more than 50,000 aid workers to the region and allocate 100 billion lira ($5.3 billion) in financial aid. Turkiye (Turkey) officials said that more than 2,600 emergency health and rescue personnel from 45 countries were deployed to the affected areas as of Tuesday.
7. Rescue operations in an isolated area near Syria have been hampered by a severe snowstorm. Because of this, difficulties are being faced in sending food and aid here. The WHO’s senior emergency official, Adelheid Marschang, said Turkey had a strong capacity to respond to the crisis, but the main need for help would be in Syria, which is already reeling from a civil war and cholera outbreak.
