BBC IT Survey: British MP Bob Blackman said on Wednesday (February 14) that the IT survey at BBC’s office has nothing to do with his documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’. Blackman claimed that the BBC documentary has been exaggerated. It is just full of sarcasm and allegations.
Speaking to News18, Blackman said that the views expressed in this are not those of the UK government. In fact, weeks after the BBC aired a two-part documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ on the prime minister and the 2002 Gujarat riots, the Income Tax Department’s crackdown has sparked controversy.
What is the matter?
Income Tax on Tuesday (February 14) conducted a ‘survey operation’ at BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of a tax evasion probe. IT officials had said about this that they are looking into the business operations of the company and the documents related to its Indian unit. Officials further said that as part of a survey, the Income Tax department only inspects the business premises of the company and does not raid the residences and other places of its promoters or directors.
What did the government say?
Regarding the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’, the Central Government had asked other social media platforms including YouTube and Twitter not to show it. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi called it propaganda. This matter went up to the Supreme Court. A petition was filed in the court demanding that the work of BBC in India be banned but it was rejected by the court.
‘Will have to suppress the media’
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge tweeted about the IT survey at the BBC office, “The freedom of the press has been under attack from time to time in the Modi government. All this has been done to suppress critical voices. No democracy can survive if institutions are used to suppress the opposition and the media. On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that the agency should be allowed to do its work.
