BJP Performance In South India: Prime minister Narendra Modi Under the leadership of BJP created many dimensions of success. The party blossomed even where it had never won before. Since 2014, BJP has either single-handedly formed governments in most of the states of the country or NDA coalition governments have been formed. But till now BJP has not been able to get success in winning the fort of South India.
South India consists of six southern states – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Out of these 6 states only Karnataka has BJP government on its own. The saffron party has not been able to make inroads in any state of South India except Karnataka. However, the party is definitely a partner in power in Puducherry.
BJP’s performance in the South
There are a total of 130 Lok Sabha seats in these six southern states. Out of 130 in South India, BJP has 22 percent i.e. only 29 Lok Sabha seats. In 2019, BJP won 25 out of 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka. In 2019, out of 17 seats in Telangana, the saffron party got only 4 seats. BJP does not have a single Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Not only this, the party does not have a single MLA in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
BJP’s challenge in the South
In South India, BJP is still considered as the party of North India. It is difficult to remove the tag of being a North Indian party in front of BJP. The second biggest challenge is that BJP does not have strong regional faces to fight regional parties in South India. Barring Karnataka in the south, most of the states are ruled by regional parties, with whom it is difficult for the BJP to fight.
Fire test will be held in Karnataka
In South India, the challenge before the BJP is to save its only government. Assembly elections are to be held in Karnataka in April-May this year. If Karnataka goes out of BJP’s hands, then it will have a direct impact in Telangana elections. BJP has emerged as the main rival in Telangana. Elections are to be held here also at the end of this year. Here BJP is trying to exert its full power. The results of Karnataka elections can have a great impact in Telangana. That’s why BJP will have to save the stronghold of Karnataka at any cost.
