Under the OMSS policy, the government allows FCI to sell food grains, especially wheat and rice, to bulk consumers and private traders at pre-determined prices in the open market from time to time. Wheat production in the country had declined to 106.84 million tonnes in the crop year 2021-22 (July-June) from 109.59 million tonnes in the previous year. The shortfall in production was due to sudden rise in heat and heatwave in some producing states.
Plan to sell 30 lakh tonnes of wheat was announced
It has been said that after lifting the wheat sold in the e-auction and making it available in the flour market, the prices are bound to fall further. Wheat is being offered with a reserve price of Rs 2,350 per quintal plus freight charges. Last month, the government had announced plans to sell three million tonnes of wheat from its buffer stock in the open market under OMSS to rein in wheat and wheat flour prices.
